Cassie Mohr Math Ed Publication Released

PROPS4DBER post-doctoral scholar Dr. Cassie Mohr has recently published an article in the Journal of Mathematical Behavior titled "Snapshots of Sameness: Characterizations of Mathematical Sameness Across Student Groups" [doi: 10.1016/j.jmathb.2024.101193]. In this work Cassie studies the conceptualizations of "sameness" as a "big idea" in mathematics in four groups of mathematics students: undergraduate students in discrete math, linear algebra, and abstract algebra as well as graduate students in mathematics. The following research questions were addressed: Have students conceptualized sameness as a mathematical concept, and if so, to what extent? Which aspects did students highlight when describing mathematical sameness? What experiences did students highlight as impactful to their characterization of sameness? The goal was to examine connections students make in the conceptualization of sameness across their mathematical experiences and to promote student reflection on this idea across mathematical coursework. Undergraduate students mostly comment on equality or course-based sameness concepts. Graduate students make connections across and within multiple contexts.
