This past Spring 2025 semester, two of our PROPS post-docs had the opportunity to continue their professional development by teaching for the College of Basic and Applied Sciences.
Cassie Mohr taught MATH3120: Differential Equations. Her students learned about the solution and application of ordinary differential equations using a variety of methods and across a variety of contexts. She noted that one of her favorite days this semester was during the final exam review week, when students made concept maps for the course. It was a joy to watch them have "aha" moments and make connections both within the course and more broadly to other courses they have taken.
Mary Foley co-taught an undergraduate course with Dr. Liz Barnes where students received science communication training and also performed research around how biology students communicate about controversial science topics. The students worked collaboratively to develop testable hypotheses, qualitatively code open-ended responses for effective and ineffective science communication skills, and analyze and visualize their findings. Mary noted that hearing a student share how they use concepts from class to have more meaningful conversations with their family about science reinforced the importance of teaching communication skills to students.
